What Constitutes an Orthodontic Emergency?

Broken or loose orthodontic appliances generally count as an emergency because they can interfere with treatment. Call us immediately so we can schedule a time to see you and fix or replace the appliance. Any time that you experience excessive pain that lasts for more than a few days after a checkup or you experience a serious problem with your appliances, give us a call. In most cases, we may be able to get you in to see the orthodontist and fix the issue quickly.

Common Orthodontic Issues and What to Do

There are a number of common problems that our patients run into occasionally. Some can be handled at home on your own. Others require immediate attention from an orthodontist. Here are some of the most common problems our patients experience and what to do:

  • Loose or broken bands. If a bracket, wire, or band ever becomes loose, call us to schedule an appointment for refitting.
  • Irritation from wires. Broken wires can be uncomfortable and cause undue irritation. If you are unable to move the wire, you can cover the end with wax or a small piece of cotton. If it is still painful, use sterilized nail clippers to cut it. If you are unable to resolve the issue, call us to schedule an appointment.
  • Losing separators. It is fairly common to lose a separator or two during treatment. There might not be any need to worry. Just give us a call, and we will let you know if it needs replacing.
  • Discomfort from treatment. Some discomfort following treatment is common, and in most cases it can be resolved with over-the-counter non-aspirin pain relievers such as acetaminophen. A heating pad or warm wash cloth is also useful in reducing swelling and soreness in the jaws. If the pain is constant or persists beyond a few days, give us a call.
