Board Certified

Orthodontics was the first area of dentistry to be recognized as a distinct specialty over 100 years ago. While many dental professionals perform orthodontic treatment, only Orthodontists limit their practice and focus 100% of their energy on orthodontic treatment.

In order to call yourself an ‘Orthodontist’ or an ‘Orthodontic Specialist,” Ohio state law requires that an individual graduate from an accredited program in orthodontics. Orthodontic training involves 2-3 years of additional training beyond dental school.

Once graduating from an orthodontic program, orthodontists may choose to take additional testing in order to become ‘Board Certified.’ Board Certification is not required to practice orthodontics or to identify oneself as an ‘Orthodontic Specialist.’ Therefore only about 25% of Orthodontists ever achieve Board Certification from the American Board of Orthodontics.

In short, Board Certification by the American Board of Orthodontics represents the highest level of academic achievement an Orthodontist can attain.

Dr. Martinez achieved his Board Certified status from the American Board of Orthodontics in May 2005.
