About Dr. Martinez

Fernando Martinez, D.D.S., M.S.D.

Dr. Fernando L. Martinez graduated from Duke University in 1992 with a B.S. in biology where he spent an additional year as a research fellow in neurobiology. He continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning his DDS and membership into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary dental society. As a dental student, Dr. Martinez furthered his research experience by studying infection control in the practice of orthodontics and was awarded an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship for his work to establish a public dental clinic for under-served patients in North Carolina.

He completed his clinical orthodontic specialty training and earned his orthodontic certificate from Indiana University in 1999. In July of 1999, Dr. Martinez began his private practice in Cincinnati, but continued working on his master’s thesis. In 2001, following the completion of his research thesis in orthodontic cephalometry, he earned his Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) also from IU. Wanting to achieve the highest level of education possible, Dr. Martinez then pursued Board Certification… something that only 25% of orthodontic specialists ever achieve. In May 2005, he achieved Diplomate Status from the American Board of Orthodontics.

Dr. Martinez recognizes the importance of staying up to date with the rapid changes in orthodontics and continues to spend in excess of 100 hours per year on continuing education despite Ohio State Dental Board requirements of only 20 hours per year. He is a member of the Greater Cincinnati Dental Study Club and the Western Hills Study Club. In addition he founded the Western Hills Interdisciplinary Study Club, a forum for dentists and dental specialists to make decisions on the most difficult dental patients. He is also a founding member of the Progressive Study Club, a national orthodontic group that meets annually to discuss the latest developments in orthodontics and holds professional memberships in local and national dental associations such as the Cincinnati Dental Society, Ohio Dental Association, American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).

As a result of Dr. Martinez’s extensive training and continuing education, he offers the latest orthodontic treatments including Invisalign, orthopedic (jaw growing) appliances, and friction-less Damon brackets. Cutting edge techniques such as TAD’s allow him to treat many patients without jaw surgery or to make previously difficult treatments easy. Finally, orthodontic companies recognize Dr. Martinez as a leader in orthodontics. He is helping to develop techniques that use state-of-the-art computer technology to decrease treatment time by up to 40%. Dr. Martinez is currently the only orthodontist in Ohio licensed to offer some of these services.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1970, he has lived in the United States since 1974 and was raised in Miami, Florida. While attending Duke University, he met his wife Tiffiny. She is a physician currently working at University and Children’s Hospital. They were married in 1997 and welcomed daughters Nina in 2002 and Maya in 2003. They reside in Colerain Township. Dr. Martinez’s main interest outside of dentistry is being a good husband and father, but he also likes to play with computers and electronic gadgets, and is a pizza connoisseur!
