At Martinez Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on providing top quality orthodontic care in a warm, friendly environment. Dr. Martinez and our dedicated team of orthodontic specialists strive to take an individualized approach to care, designing specialized treatment plans to perfectly suit each patient's unique orthodontic needs. But as important as the work we do in our office is, equally important is what goes on outside the office. A strong oral hygiene regimen is critical to successful treatment, and this page will give you some info on useful techniques and tools to help keep your teeth and appliances clean.

Interdental Toothbrush

An interdental toothbrush, also known as a Proxabush, is a small, pine-tree shaped brush that's great for getting underneath your wires and between brackets. When used gently so as not to damage wires, it's an extremely helpful tool in maintaining healthy teeth and gums while wearing braces.

Antibacterial Mouthwash

Proxyl, a hydrogen peroxide-based antiseptic mouthwash, is great for reducing inflammation in your cheeks and gums. This can help prevent or decrease infections and irritation that occur as a result of your braces. To use it, swish about two teaspoons (half a capful) of Peroxyl in your mouth for 60 seconds, then spit it out. We recommend using Peroxyl up to four times a day: once after every meal, then once before bed. In combination with other oral hygiene practices, Peroxyl can help prevent inflammation or irritation caused by braces, canker sores, cheek bites, or other minor oral injuries.

Topical Fluoride

Phos-Flur is a fluoridated gel that helps to safeguard against tooth decay by combating bacteria and replacing vital minerals in your tooth enamel. To use it, squeeze a small strip onto a toothbrush - just as you would normal toothpaste - and apply it to every surface of your teeth for one minute. Spit it out, but don't eat or drink anything for the next 30 minutes - this allows time for the active ingredient to work on your teeth. Keep in mind that Phos-Flur is not a substitute to brushing a flossing, but a great addition to your oral health regimen.

Cleaning a Removable Appliance

If you're using a removable appliance like Invisalign or a retainer, it's critical to keep it clean. Be sure to brush it every time you brush your teeth, and soak it at least once a day using a denture-cleaning tablet and a glass of tap water. Not only will your appliance taste better, but you'll also be preventing accumulation of plaque, bacteria, and acid - something vital to your oral health.
