Common Problems

Orthodontic Treatment For Patients Of All Ages In Cincinnati, OH

In a perfect world, our bites, jaws, and teeth would look and function exactly how they’re supposed to. For most people, this isn’t the case, which is why Martinez Orthodontics works hard to correct common orthodontic problems to drastically improve the quality of our patient’s lives.

At our Cincinnati office, one of the most common issues we see are malocclusions, or “bad bites.” These can be genetically inherited, or caused by certain behaviors such as thumb sucking, breathing through the mouth, oral disease, or accidents. It’s important to observe and monitor your children to detect these habits and seek early orthodontic treatment. Of course, Dr. Martinez can correct even the most severe malocclusions and orthodontic issues, but the earlier you or your child are screened, the faster the issue will be corrected.

Types of Malocclusions

Underbite happens when the lower jaw extends too far out past the upper jaw, which causes the lower teeth to sit outside of the upper front teeth. The problems with underbite depend on the severity of the case, but it can cause eating and speaking problems, chronic jaw pain, and even tooth decay if left untreated.

Overbite is the opposite of underbite, occurring when the upper front teeth extend too far out over the front teeth. In extreme cases, this may cause the lower teeth to hit the roof of the mouth. If overbite isn’t corrected, it can cause trauma and shortening of the teeth, because of wear and tear around the edges.

Crossbite occurs when the lower teeth sit outside the upper teeth, which can cause tooth stratification and negatively impact jaw growth. Premature wear and tear of teeth can also occur if crossbite is left untreated.

Openbite occurs when the upper front teeth fail to overlap the lower teeth, leaving a gap in the middle of your smile. This can impact bite function, chewing, and is known to cause speech defects. Most commonly, open can result in “lisping,” which causes the individual to pronounce ‘s’ and ‘z’ sounds with ‘th’ pronunciations.

Other Common Orthodontic Issues

Spacing issues occur when teeth are too far apart, and can be caused by missing or undersized teeth, poor habits, and periodontal disease. It’s important to have the spaces closed as soon as possible, to prevent more severe oral issues later on.

Crowding is caused by the teeth not having sufficient room to erupt, and impacts both the appearance and function of the bite. Generally, we can correct crowding with expansion followed by braces, eliminating the need for tooth extraction.

Upper Front Teeth Protrusion

Upper front teeth protrusion occurs when the lower teeth don't extend far enough forward and the upper teeth extend too far forward, affecting both the look and function of your bite. The front teeth are especially prone to damage, which makes orthodontic intervention necessary to properly align the bite.

Mismatched Dental Midlines

This problem occurs when the back bite doesn't fit properly, impairing jaw growth and dental function.

Correcting Orthodontic Problems

All of these problems can impair the function of the bite, the natural look of the smile, and even jeopardize the health of the teeth. Using treatments such as metal braces, Invisalign, and Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs), Dr. Martinez will gradually bring the teeth and jaw into proper alignment, creating a healthier smile. Your new smile will significantly improve you and/or your child’s quality of life, and with proper retention, you'll reap the benefits of your beautiful teeth for the rest of your life.
